About

My work focuses on the cultural history of African societies in the past 1000 years. I'm particularly interested in the political changes that have taken place in coastal Senegal during the Atlantic era, how those were manifested in social landscapes, and how they shaped the historical experiences of rural societies. I am also interested in the history of Catholic missionaries in Senegal, especially the nature of their relationship with the French colonial state and African communities they sough to convert. I try to teach and write about these things, and more broadly about the relationship between people and objects, between history and memory, especially in colonial and postcolonial Africa... So much for a concise description!
